Signs of an Active Raccoon Presence

To determine if a raccoon has babies in your attic, listen for high-pitched, bird-like chittering or crying, typically between 10 PM and 4 AM. Watch for a mother raccoon entering and leaving the attic multiple times a day to forage, and check the attic for shredded insulation and a foul odor.

  • Distinct Vocalizations: Baby raccoons are very noisy and make a continuous, complex mix of chittering, squealing, and crying sounds often mistaken for trapped birds.
  • Frequent Daytime Activity: While raccoons are strictly nocturnal, a mother with young will often be seen coming and going in broad daylight to feed herself so she can nurse.
  • Nesting and Waste Areas: Raccoons will tear up fiberglass insulation to build a soft, warm nest. They will also establish a “latrine” area for bathroom waste, which causes a strong, foul odor that may eventually seep into your ceiling or walls.
  • Heavier Scratching: Adult raccoons are quite heavy (up to 20 lbs). If you hear slow, heavy stomping or scratching in addition to the babies’ cries, a family is likely up there.

Structural Destruction: Damage in the Attic

Raccoons are not just noisy guests; they are destructive tenants. Their high intelligence and powerful hands allow them to tear apart home structures in hours. Common damage includes:

Beyond structural damage, raccoons pose a severe health risk through the spread of Baylisascaris procyonis, a parasitic roundworm that lives in the intestines of raccoons. Their microscopic eggs are shed in the raccoon’s feces.

  • Raccoon Latrines: Raccoons designate specific areas, often in attics or near home foundations, as ‘latrines’ for defecation. These areas become concentrated hot spots for millions of microscopic roundworm eggs.
  • Extreme Resilience: Roundworm eggs are exceptionally hardy, surviving extreme temperatures and standard disinfectants. They can remain infectious in the soil or insulation for years.
  • Human Risk: If inhaled or ingested—often accidentally by children or during unequipped DIY cleanup—these parasites can cause devastating neurological damage, blindness, or even death.
